My final dying roar
“If I should die before you continue, you will have heard my final dying roar”
This is a very sentimental blog for me. There’s no lesson, no narrative, just a eulogy for something I loved very dearly. I can’t believe it is really ending, something I’ve put a 1000 hours into. I’ll never get to topple the Tyrant king or see the story through to the end. But I love every memory I’ll get to hold onto in its wake. This one is for every soul who spent hours grinding death mode DOG, who killed THE LORDE legitimately (as much as you could anyways lol), and those who spent their summers in front of a screen instead of outside.

I first installed Terraria when I was 8 years old all the way back in 2013. My older cousin Josh introduced me to it when I was over at his place. I convinced my dad (somehow) to let me make a Steam account and buy Terraria for 4.99 USD. To say this game would be one of the most influential things on my entire life would be an understatement. For a while, it was my whole life. To this day I’ve invested 1,529 hours into Terraria (most of this was tModLoader pre-split), 233 hours into tModLoader and hundreds more across PS3, PS4, 3DS, and Mobile. Not to mention the hundreds if not thousands more watching my favorite YouTubers and streamers.

I still remember October 2013 when 1.2 finally dropped and I fought Plantera for the first time (I think I literally cried because I was so scared). Or when my cousin and myself were racing to beat WOF and I pulled a lava charm from a golden chest and was able to get Lava Waders so I could fight him sooner as I didn’t need an arena. I grew up alongside this game but even more than Terraria the Calamity mod was what I really lived on. I genuinely think I’ve beaten Calamity over 50+ times, I started back when Cryogen was first added.

Yes that’s what he used to look like before getting yassified.
I remember staying up all night with my friends grinding out Yharon together or crashing the game with crystal bullets and a P90. I can’t begin to describe how impactful and important this was to me. For a large part of my childhood I would go to school, come home then hop on Calamity and try a crazy new challenge run I saw one of my favorite YouTubers do. I’ve stayed up way too late too many times saying “just one more attempt”.
I remember the first time I fought the Devourer of Gods, I died well over 200+ times if not more. I think it took my 12 year old brain a full week of attempts to finally gain the muscle memory and skill to take him down.

I don’t know how many times I saw that text on screen. I remember when “Universal Collapse” became the 2nd phase theme for DOG, that song to this day is still what I use when I need to get into the zone. When 1 hit would mean death, when everything is on the line, that song can just bring me into the right headspace because of how many times I’ve heard it. It triggers something in me nothing else can.

I wish it could’ve ended on better terms. I would have loved to see it really come to its conclusion. Hopefully someone will figure out how to pick up the pieces and continue but right now as of 2026-09-13 the Calamity mod has ceased development. The tale of a cruel world comes to an end. I know this is very melodramatic for the ending of development for a Terraria mod but this was my whole childhood. I can’t help but look back longingly for a simpler time. When figuring out how to beat Signus was the biggest problem of my day.
Goodbye Calamity, thank you for everything.
